Ukiyo-e Landing

Ukiyo-e

A fusion of storytelling and craft - Japan and India

Ukiyo - e is a Japanese woodblock printing style developed during the 17th century.

Ukiyo - e meaning ; ‘pictures of the floating world’.

This table linen collection is inspired from popular Japanese elements such as : The great wave of Kanagawa, handfan , cherry blossoms and Koi fish.

I hand drew these motifs and got wooden blocks made by Indian artisans. Ghanshyam bhai from Pethapur, Gujarat, brought these designs to life by hand carving them onto teak wood.

I pretreated the fabrics, hand dyed the table mats using Indigo vat and printed using pigments.
